Dry roast the red chillies, coriander seeds, turmeric, and onions, till golden brown and grind to a fine paste. Heat 1 tsp. oil in a kadai, add crushed garlic.

Clean the crabs by opening the shell. Rinse it in the pot of water at least 3 to 4 times. Add Turmeric powder, salt, finely chopped onions, ginger and green chillies to the cleaned crabs and 2-3 drops of coconut oil. Mix it well and keep it for about 20 minutes.

Take all the masala ingredients in a mixie and grind it to a smooth paste. Set aside. Take a pressure cooker and add in the sliced onions, ground masala, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt, oil and 3 tablespoons of water. Cover the pan and cook for 7 minutes on medium flame. Remove from heat and wait for the pressure to release. Set aside.

Top and tail the ivy gourds. Using the flat of a knife, smash them up until they split a little, but leave them whole. Don't smash too hard, as then they will get mashed up. Rinse 1 heaped cup sona masuri (230 grams) very well in water. Then add the rice in a pressure cooker, also add 1/4 to 1/3 teaspoon salt or add as required. Add 2.5 cups water, you can add water depending on the quality of rice.  Pressure cook for 10 to 12 minutes or 3 to 4 whistles or till the rice is cooked well, do ensure that the rice does not get overcooked, for the hand pounded sona masuri rice, pressure cooked for 14 minutes. when the pressure settles down on its own, remove the lid, fluff the rice.

Heat a tsp of oil, roast the ingredients under Bisi Bela Bath Masala, adding coconut at the end. Roast everything until it becomes slightly brown in color and dry grind it. You can prepare this a few days before if you are using kopra as it will not get spoiled. Store it in an airtight container. Pressure cook rice with 4 ½ cups of water for 4 whistles.
